This is the ‘computational thinking’ book we have all been waiting for! Books by John Guttag. Thank you for your feedback. This new edition has been updated for Python 3, reorganized to make it easier to use for courses that cover only a subset of the material, and offers additional material including five new chapters. Nevertheless, its johj will obtain a very solid foundation. I chose to read and review this book purely based guttat the title rather than doing my normal level of research.

I had to do some review of college level pre-calculus but all in all I’d buy it again. I have know Prof. Review This is the ‘computational thinking’ book we have all been waiting for! The book begins by introducing Python, including the basic elements of the language such as objects, expressions, typing, variables, branches and strings. This book walks you through the vast majority of computational techniques that you need to know as a software engineer.

Very gyttag and ideal for all audiences. Please try again later. That being said the only parts that stumped me were the parts where it was mathematically based. It is really rare to find gkttag topics covered in a book meant for beginners. Students are introduced to Python and the basics of programming in the context of such computational concepts and techniques as exhaustive enumeration, bisection search, and efficient approximation algorithms.

It is a very johb introduction to computer science and python programming. Quotes from Introduction to C But the overall arc of the book provides a solid course of study for those just getting started with computer programming and computational data analysis, two skills no scientist or engineer should be without.

The book does not require knowledge of mathematics beyond high school algebra, but does assume that readers are comfortable with rigorous thinking and not intimidated by mathematical concepts. The finger exercises often require additional knowledge of programming which has not yet been introduced in the book.

In conclusion, I can strongly recommend this book provided that one reads the title in full as a manual for budding computer scientists, as well as an introduction to the Python programming language.

I would not have liked to have taken the course without this book. If you are not already a programmer and want to learn python, read “Python the hard way” and the educational materials from the Google dev center.

There’s no such thing as the only computer science book you’ll ever need. It is an extensive introduction which dives into stochastic models and inferential statistics.

Superb content, as one might expect from MIT. This book introduces students with little or no prior programming experience to the art of computational problem solving using Python and various Python libraries, including PyLab. Jun 26, Adam Dodd rated it really liked it. Refresh and try again.

Great book, some great examples on running trials. Instead this books uses Python to teach you about computation and how to think and solve problems like a computer scientist.

Great material for anyone trying to learn computer programming or the python language itself.
